Cinedea Acquires Italian Rights to Cymbeline

Cinedea, a distributor-producer-talent agency, has acquired Italian rights to Michael Almereyda’s romantic adventure “Cymbeline,” starring Dakota Johnson, Ethan Hawke, Penn Badgley, Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich and Anton Yelchin.

Repped by International Film Trust, the international sales arm of Michael Benaroya’s Benaroya Pictures, “Cymbeline” world premieres Wednesday at Venice. The Italy deal adds to multiple major territories, including the U.K.’s Koch Media, Germany’s KSM, Swen Group (Latin America), Nashe Kino (CIS), Happinet (Japan), Transmission Films (Australia/New Zealand), HGC Entertainment (China) and Sookie Pictures (South Korea).

This version of “Cymbeline” — one of Shakespeare’s least-known plays — is set against an epic face-off between corrupt cops and a drug-dealing bikers’ gang in a corruption-sodden U.S. city. Pic reteams Hawke and Almereyda after 2000’s “Hamlet.”

“It is a remarkable Shakespeare adventure, an extraordinary text. Ethan Hawke was the first person to join on; he recognized the challenge and drew delight from it,” said Almereyda. “‘Cymbeline’ has wildness, energy, extremes of emotion — that’s what drew me and the actors. There are echoes of many of Shakespeare’s great plays, though it’s officially classified as a romance, not a tragedy. It has streaks of comedy.”

Movie centers on a young love story, its “emotional drama, and a sense of misdirected love and betrayal. We did our best to keep the story intimate, but it’s often played out in unexpected settings, alternately mundane and spectacular,” Almereyda added.

Anthony Katagas produced “Cymbeline” for Keep Your Head Prods., alongside Benaroya.

New Role for Dakota: A Bigger Splash

“Fifty Shades of Grey” doesn’t bow for another seven months but in the meantime, Dakota Johnson is setting up her future slate of films.

Johnson is set to star in “I Am Love” helmer Luca Guadagnino’s “A Bigger Splash.”

Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes join Johnson with Michael Costigan producing.

Based on the 1969 French crime drama “La Piscine,” the story revolves around an uneasy triangle that forms between a couple and a younger woman during the couple’s vacation, leading to a sinister end. Jane Birkin played the younger woman while Alain Delon and Romy Schneider played the couple in the Jacques Deray noir.

David Kajganich is writing the script. Shooting starts next month in Italy.

Though “Fifty Shades of Grey” wrapped production this past spring, Johnson has been particular about choosing her next project. She had several offers for bigger films, but decided to stick with dramas in order to work with more well-respected directors.

She recently wrapped shooting on Warner Bros.’ untitled Whitey Bulger pic starring Johnny Depp which the studio has slated for a fall 2015 release, lining it up for an award season run. Johnson is also attached to star in “Forever, Interrupted,” on which she is also a producer.

This latest role gives Johnson another serious role to add to her resume prior to the release of “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Johnson is riding the momentum from the release of Universal and Focus’ “Fifty Shades of Grey” trailer which has become the highest viewed trailer of 2014 as well as one of Universal’s most-watched trailers ever.

Trailer views don’t necessarily correlate with box office grosses, but the interest level is a good sign both for the film and for Johnson’s career.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” bows Feb. 13. Johnson is repped by WME and Management 360.

Dakota Johnson Dating Matthew Hitt?

Dakota Johnson and her possible new boyfriend Matthew Hitt hold hands and show off some PDA while taking a stroll around town on Wednesday afternoon (July 23) in New York City.

The 24-year-old Fifty Shades of Grey actress was previously linked to actor Jordan Masterson while Matt was previously in a relationship with Atlanta de Cadenet.

Matt, 26, is from Wales in the United Kingdom and he is the lead vocalist of the band Drowners. The indie rock group released their debut album earlier this year and Matt wrote and composed all of the songs.

In addition to being a singer and guitar player, Matt also has had a successful modeling career so far. He has appeared in campaigns for Gucci, AllSaints, and Band of Outsiders.
